Mindset Fitness Training

Taking steps to build your mindset fitness helps you manage stress, boost physical health, improve work efficiency, nurture relationships, and overall happiness.

We strengthen the mindset first, before we shift our focus towards the future

What is mindset fitness?

Also known as mental fitness,  is defined as a state of well-being and having a positive sense of how we feel, think, and act, like how physical fitness refers to the ability of your body systems to work together efficiently to allow you to be healthy and perform activities of daily living.

The primary challenge in promoting mental health awareness is to engage individuals to understand mental health without attaching stigma to it. The purpose is to empower them to integrate positive mental health practices into every aspect of their lives; including personal life, workplace setting, relationships and overall lifestyle.

In terms of physical health, each of us can face specific conditions based on our family history and surroundings. We might have goals for staying physically fit. For instance, if heart disease runs in your family, your goals may include eating well, exercising regularly, and maintaining low cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Just like with physical health, family history and environment can affect our mental health. Our family history and surroundings can make us more vulnerable to certain issues. But sometimes, we don’t think about setting goals to keep our minds healthy. For instance, if anxiety runs in your family, your goals might include journaling, meditating, sleeping well, and reducing stress to manage anxiety.

“Mental Fitness is using resources and skills to flexibly adapt to challenges or advantages to enable optimal functioning.”

– Robinson, Oades & Caputi, 2015

How it works

Currently, people know a lot less about mental health and well-being than they do about physical health and fitness. Much like the four elements of physical fitness (cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility, and a healthy weight), endurance, strength, flexibility can also be applied to mental fitness.

How does mindset
fitness help you?

  • It’s about strengthening the brain’s pathways for realistic and objective thinking, breaking patterns for more positive emotions, and countering a pessimistic outlook. If you tend to see life negatively, this can help.
  • Our brain’s ability to change, known as neuroplasticity, allows us to rewire our thoughts. Repeating negative thoughts makes them stronger, but mental fitness helps build healthier mental networks.
  • Mental fitness empowers you to choose how you react to situations, promoting calm responses over impulsive and regrettable reactions.
  • This leads to increased confidence, resilience, and energy. While life can naturally bring sadness and worry, enhancing mental fitness makes it harder for these feelings to turn into depression or anxiety.

How does mental fitness work?

Our brains follow neural pathways, which are like well-worn tracks. Repeated thoughts reinforce these pathways, making thinking automatic.

The problem with automatic thinking is when it leads to unhelpful reactions based on past emotions or triggers. While routines are good, we must be aware of the thought patterns we’re reinforcing.

Automatic thinking evolved to protect us by looking for danger, but in today’s world, it can lead to harmful thoughts and actions.

The good news is our minds can be rewired to change these harmful pathways. Just like we strengthen muscles, we can create better neural pathways that serve us, which is what we mean by mental fitness training.

What are the benefits of mindset fitness?

When you wind down for the night, your body relaxes, but your mind might not follow suit.

Incorporating mental fitness training into your life increases your chances of reducing symptoms of stress, anxiety, burnout, and depression. It can bring a sense of peace through guided imagery and mindfulness, reducing tension in your body and mind by breaking unhelpful thought patterns.

Developing the skills for better mental fitness can benefit you and everyone around you.

  • Being in the moment: In a present state, we can enhance information retention, attentive listening, and awareness without succumbing to distractions.
  • Responding, not reacting: When we have more control over our automatic thoughts, we can choose more rational and less emotional responses.
  • Improved cognitive function: Better focus, quicker processing, improved memory, heightened concentration, effective time management, and enhanced communication positively impact both personal and professional life.
  • Increased Positivity: Greater awareness allows us to notice and reframe thoughts in more constructive ways, fostering kindness, compassion, and an optimistic mindset.
  • Increased confidence Reframing our thoughts and self-beliefs can lead to greater confidence, self-compassion, and empathy.
  • Skill development: Mental fitness training equips you with life skills for better mental health management, including thought balance, goal setting, mood control, and more.
  • Better sleep: Just like physical fitness, mental fitness also contributes to improved sleep quality.

Recognising your patterns

Just like physical health, understanding patterns and behaviours affecting mental health is crucial. Qualified life coach consultants, and psychologists assess stress, anxiety, and depression levels through questions, helping uncover distress-causing patterns.

Have you ever noticed how stress, worry, or anger can lead to a downward spiral in your thoughts and moods, causing rapid mood shifts? Understanding these shifts is essential for improving mental fitness.

Self-awareness is a crucial first step. It involves strategies and tools to unpack your feelings and understand the reasons behind them. Tracking your moods is a great way to connect your feelings to specific triggers. Reflecting on your mood after it has passed can help identify triggers and reactions.

Examining the frequency and intensity of mood shifts reveals patterns that describe your day-to-day or week-to-week feelings.

Examining the frequency and intensity of mood shifts reveals patterns that describe your day-to-day or week-to-week feelings.

These patterns can be linked to your behaviour, physiology, or thoughts. For example, feeling down in the morning but improving after breakfast suggests a connection between eating and improved mood.

Examining triggers for both positive and negative shifts helps identify trends. The more you track your moods and understand your triggers, the better you can make sense of your emotions and break unwanted patterns.

The RENU Series Difference

The RENU Mindset Fitness training model is based on 4 key factors:

Flexibility

Strength

Endurance

Reset

In our unique approach, we’ve added a fourth element known as ‘Reset.’ This new dimension is inspired from C.R. Snyder’s 1994 book, “The Psychology of Hope.” Snyder’s work highlights the importance of three factors: having a clear destination (defining your goal), possessing the willpower (motivation, determination to pursue the goal), and holding the waypower (the ability to find the most effective path to achieve the goal).

By integrating the work of Robinson, Oades, and Caputi with concepts from C.R. Snyder’s book, we’ve constructed a comprehensive framework for improving mental fitness and succeeding in the realm of goal setting. This holistic approach covers a wide spectrum of mental attributes and strategies, providing individuals with the tools they need to effectively pursue their objectives.
