Hair loss as a woman
From aging to hormonal changes to certain medical conditions, there are many potential causes of hari loss women.
Hair loss as a woman is usually genetic
The most common reason why women suffer from hair loss is that it’s in the genes.
Heredity can skip a few generations, so just because you carry the genetics for hair loss doesn’t mean you’ll get thin hair.
Some people have encoded in their genes that hair loss should start at a young age. Regardless, there are very good opportunities for treatment if it is started in time.By far the most common reason we lose hair and are affected by hair loss is genetic. The medical name for hereditary hair loss is androgenic alopecia.
Normally we lose 100-200 hairs every day, but in hereditary hair loss we lose much more than that.
Androgenic alopecia can begin as early as adolescence for men. For women, hair loss and thinning usually occurs after menopause.
What is hereditary hair loss?
Some people have hair loss coded into their genes to start at a young age, while others keep their hair until they are older.
A common myth is that it is only your mother’s genes that cause hereditary alopecia (hair loss). There is no evidence for this. Heredity can also skip generations.
This means that if you carry the genetic predisposition for hair loss, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you will start losing your hair.
There are very good possibilities for treatment of hereditary hair loss if it is started in time.
What happens to our hair as we get older?
A healthy hair follicle normally reaches its full size when we are young. Then the hair follicle produces a strong hair with a longer anagen growth phase and it takes longer to lose the hair strand.
As we get older, the hair follicle shrinks. When the hair follicle gets smaller, it produces a weaker hair. The older we get, the more stunted our hairs become and the thinner our hair becomes.
Eventually, the hair follicle is so stunted that it stops producing hair altogether.
Hereditary hair loss speeds up this process.
The Symptoms
Whilst men experience hair loss at the hairline and top of the head, women with androgenetic alopecia usually see the beginnings of hair loss at the part line. This thinning often progresses gradually from the top of the head to other areas.
Signs of hair loss can include:
- The emergence of bald spots
- Losing clumps of hair
- Overall thinning
- Widening of the part line
- Full-body hair loss

What treatments can help with hair loss?
Bio-Organic Cellular Anti-Aging Solutions offer PRP and PRF regenerative therapy.
If you start in time, hereditary hair loss and thinning hair can be prevented with PRP and PRF. These treatments also helps if you notice that your hair has become thinner, if there are hair follicles left in your hair.
A PRP and PRF treatment involves injecting platelet-rich plasma or platelet-rich fibrin from your own blood into your scalp. When blood plasma containing growth factors is injected superficially into the scalp, the hair follicle grows and becomes thicker.
As the hair follicle becomes thicker, the thickness of the hair increases and hair begin to grow faster.
Hormonal Imbalances
Hormonal imbalances can have a significant effect on hair loss in women. The hormones associated with hair loss in women are androgen. When the body has too many of these hormones, it can cause the hair follicles to shrink and eventually stop producing hair.
This type of hair loss is referred to as androgenetic alopecia or female pattern baldness. Women with hormonal imbalances may find that their hair becomes thinner over time or that they experience more hair loss than usual. If this is the case, it is important to seek medical advice from a qualified healthcare professional in order to determine the cause of the imbalance and to find a suitable treatment plan.
Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies
Vitamin and mineral deficiencies can contribute to hair loss in women. Vitamins A, B, C, D and E are all essential vitamins for healthy hair growth. A lack of these vitamins can cause hair to become brittle, thin, and fall out.
Additionally, mineral deficiencies such as iron, zinc and selenium can lead to hair loss in women. Iron is essential for hair growth and can become depleted due to poor nutrition, anaemia, and heavy menstruation.
Zinc and selenium deficiencies can also lead to hair loss, as these minerals are essential for healthy hair growth. Identifying a vitamin or mineral deficiency and addressing it can help to reduce hair loss in women.
Medications and Treatments
Common medications and treatments used to treat depression include antidepressant medications, psychotherapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and light therapy. Antidepressants help to change the balance of chemicals in the brain, which can help to elevate mood.
Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, can help individuals identify and challenge negative thoughts and behaviours that contribute to depression. ECT and TMS are two forms of electrical stimulation used to treat depression that can produce positive results.
Finally, light therapy is a type of therapy that involves exposure to bright light to help alleviate symptoms of depression.
Telogen Effluvium
Telogen Effluvium is a type of hair loss in women that is often caused by physical or emotional stress, hormonal changes, or dietary changes. It is characterized by the acceleration of the hair’s growth cycle, causing a large number of follicles to enter the resting phase, or telogen, all at once.
This causes the hair to shed more than usual. In some cases, this shedding can be quite severe and can continue for months. Treatments for Telogen Effluvium are typically focused on stimulation therapy like growth factor injections and minoxidil also helps.
Stress management techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, and exercise can help reduce stress, and in turn, reduce hair loss.
Alopecia Areata
Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the hair follicles resulting in patchy hair loss. It is most common in young adults and affects both men and women.
It can cause severe hair loss in some cases leading to partial or complete baldness. In women, it is more common than in men and can cause distress due to the visible effects.
Treatment can include topical lotions and creams, steroid injections, and phototherapy. The outlook is generally good with most people noticing hair regrowth within six months to a year.
